Canton
Canton Township, generally referred to simply as Canton, was formed in 1834. It was named after the city of Canton in China in part because of the increased trade relations the U.S. was experiencing with China at the time. Canton Township was primarily a farming community. Because of its proximity to Detroit farm products, especially sweet corn, were transported and sold at the Detroit Farmer’s Market.
Today, Canton Township has a population of about 85,000. Its location allows easy access to Detroit and other Wayne County areas. The Township offers a great assortment of shopping opportunities including IKEA.
Recreational opportunities abound including Summit on the Park which is a state of the art facility featuring a fitness center, personal training, aquatic center, banquet and conference center, full size gymnasium, racquetball court, and child care facility. You can also check out Victory Park which features Canton Sports Center, An Ice Arena and High Velocity Sports.
